    • Heroin is an illegal opiate drug
    • also called diacetylmorphine
    • It is highly addictive
    • Gained popularity in 1990's
    • accounted for 39% of drug related deaths in 1992
    • In 2000, the average age for first trying heroin was 22.3 years
    • the first heroin smoking originated in Shanghai in the 1920's
    • drugs are basically painkillers
    • short term effects of heroin
      • Rush
      • Depressed Respiration
      • Clouded mental functioning
      • Nausea and vomiting
      • suppression of pain
    • During a research study; they found that, the death rate was 50 to 100 times higher than of the general population of same age men
    • In 1993 there were 63,000 emergency room visits related to heroin
    • heroin in powder form can be sniffed or inhaled and when dissolved with water, it can be injected
    •  At the beginning of the 21st century Afghanistan, Myanmar (Burma) and Laos were leading opium-producing countries.
    • The United States has about 810,000 opiate addicts
    •  A heroin abuser may inject up to four times a day
    • over 80% of heroin users inject with a partner, but 80% of overdose victims are found alone by paramedics
